I’m sure we have all heard or know that the sun had the ability to lighten our hair.
Just as the sun affects our skin by giving us a tan or giving us a burn that needs that time to heal. There are things you need to pay attention to while we go into these summers months. More time in the sun means that we need to protect our hair more. Not only from the heat of the sun but also the power of the UV rays.
This is super important for my Beautiful Blondes and Wonderful Fantasy Colors. The sun is not your best friend, it is actually more of an enemy that we all need to be aware of.
Over the past week I have been in Hawaii, meaning days and hours in the sun. Along with wearing my sunscreen daily, I have also made sure to use my products daily as well to make sure that I have not only a good thermal protectant in my hair to beat the heat, but also the UVA and UVB protectant to keep my color nice as well as the health of my hair.
The sun has the power of lightener (bleach) which removes the pigment from our hair and makes our hair lighter. This is the part we need to be aware of the affects that it has on our hair.
If you are out in the sun for a prolonged time, those UVA and UVB rays can cause damage to the outside of the our hair.
“Sun damage can come in the forms of discoloration, dry and brittle strands, broken or split ends, thinning and frizziness,” says Wilma Bergfeld, MD. “Damaged hair has a dry look and feel, is unmanageable and won’t hold a curl or style. Damaged hair usually dries quickly, too.”
PROTECT YOUR HAIR
Using a UV protectant like Celestite Protection Elixir (UVA/UVB) or Tanzanite Detangler (UV protectant) will help protect your hair from the damaging rays of the sun. This is not a full proof protection, it can wear off, just like sunscreen wears off and needs to be reapplied.
Wearing a hat is a great way to help keep the sun off your hair to keep it healthy and strong.
LIGHTENING POWERS AND WHAT YOU NEED TO REMEMBER
Back to the fact that the sun will lighten your hair. This means that the underlining pigment will be able to more visible to the eyes. So my white platinum blondes that don’t want to see any yellow/gold in your hair. PAY ATTENTION.
The more you are in the sun, the lighter your hair can get and more GOLD you will see in your hair. Your toner and purple shampoo can only do so much. The sun has more power and will win. So if you don’t want to see yellow for longer. STAY OUT OF THE SUN.
Also, remember that the sun is drying to your hair and can make it more brittle…. Purple shampoo is alkaline on the pH scale which dries out your hair, and can make it brittle as well. Deep condition treatments are going to be a HUGE must in the summer, especially if you do a lot of swimming or spend a lot of time in the sun.
