How Often Should I Trim My Hair?

Short Basic Answer: About every 6 weeks.

Longer Answer: That will depend on you and how you treat your hair.

How you handle your hair day to day, what you use on your hair, and anything that happens to your hair will change the time between trims…

For Example: If you are a person who likes to heat style your hair everyday, but forgets to add a heat protectant… in the end that means you will need a trim sooner than if you didn’t like to use heat on your hair daily and you have a great hair regime with good products that actually do what they say they are going to do.

Taking care of your hair is super important! Especially if you don’t want to be getting a trim every 6 weeks. Taking care of your hair will allow your HAIR TO GROW! 😄 And we all know how long it feels like for our hair to grow…

It sometimes feels like it takes ages! And going in for a trim is the last thing you want to do because it feels like we are back tracking with the length of our hair. Here are some of my favorite tips to keep your hair happy and healthy! ALWAYS use a heat protectant.

Before blowdrying and before any hot tool use. The more heat protectant the better. You can fry chicken with 350°F, so please refrain from frying your hair. Protect your hair from the heat!

Lower the Temperature on your Tools.

Like I said before you can fry chicken at 325°F, so lower those temperatures. The following is the temperatures that I would suggest. I use them everyday in the salon, along with my favorite heat protectants.

FINE Hair - Straighten 300°-320° Curling 320°-340°

COARSE Hair- Straighten 320°-340° Curling 340°-360°

Don’t Use Heat Every Day

Giving your hair breaks from the heat is one of the best ways to keep your hair healthy. Using good styling products that help hold the desired style for a few days will give your hair a nice rest. The more heat you use on your hair the more you’ll start seeing those split ends pop up, and need to get more trims.

Find a Stylist that Listens to you! - Listen to Your Stylist’s Suggestion

I know cutting your hair can be scary. And I have heard all the horror stories of someone hair getting cut too short, or when someone wanted to take 1 inch off and the stylist took 5 or more. I have heard them all, which is why I have a comb that has a ruler.

As a stylist I will show you the exact amount that I would suggest to get a nice clean cut with little to no spilt ends. You then have the option to say less or more. But listening to the recommendation of your stylist will help get your hair to a healthy starting point.

Use Hair Ties that are Softer on Your Hair

If you have to put your hair up a lot, using a scrunchie or one of the spiral hair ties will help stop breakage in your hair. The elastic hair ties can be too tight on your hair and cause breakage. Chelsea Mahala
